Where Can I Find the Schedule?

The ferry schedule can vary, so it’s best to check online for the latest departure times. For the current schedule and any changes, visit the official ferry schedule here (link the site where you found it or direct them to the ferry operator’s website).

How Early Should I Arrive?

Costa Rica’s relaxed pace means the ferry schedule can sometimes be forgiving, but it’s still best to plan ahead, especially if you’re bringing a vehicle.

  • Recommended Arrival: Aim to arrive 20 minutes before departure to ensure a smooth boarding process.
  • Our Experience: When we traveled with a car, we arrived only about 5 minutes before departure and were still able to board. However, this is cutting it close! Arriving with a buffer is wise to avoid any last-minute stress.

Do I Need to Book in Advance?

Generally, advance booking isn’t necessary for most travelers, but it’s worth considering during peak season.

  • Off-Peak Travel: If you’re traveling in the low season, like May, you can easily purchase tickets at the station without advance booking.
  • Peak Season & Vehicles: If you’re traveling during the busy season (December–April or holiday weekends) and bringing a car, booking a day in advance is recommended to secure a spot for your vehicle.

Catch the Bioluminescent Glow

One of the magical experiences on this route is the chance to see bioluminescent waters. The bay here has year-round bioluminescence, so keep an eye on the water as the ferry moves—you might catch glimpses of glowing blue-green light beneath the surface, a mesmerizing display of Costa Rica’s natural wonders.

We traveled in May and definitely did not need to book ahead of time. We purchased a ticket at the station. If you are traveling in peak season AND bringing a car, then it might be worth buying one a day in advance.
